How to Drink More Water
Our bodies are made up of 50-75% water, or nearly 60% of our body weight. The amount of water in different parts of the body varies with the wettest parts being:
The Brain – 95%
Lungs – 90%
Blood – 83%
Muscles – 76%
Skin – 64%
Bones – 22-31%
Water is a vital nutrient that makes up the basis of blood, digestive juices, urine, and perspiration. Our bodies can't store water, so it is imperative that we replenish our water supply every day to replace what's lost through the skin, lungs, urine, and feces.
Fun fact: when you are not drinking enough water, our bodies retain more water putting itself into survival mode not knowing if you will supply it with enough water for the day!
The basic goal is to drink at LEAST 1 gallon of water per day. It really is not as hard as you may think.
Many clients over the years have asked me if the water they mix in their greens, pre workout protein etc. count toward your daily intake goal. The answer is yes!
The easiest way to get the ball rolling and figure out how close or far you are from hydrating your body is to buy a BPA FREE GALLON WATER JUG and fill it up at the beginning of each day. Only use that jug for the rest of the day to fill you bottle – for water alone, protein, pre-workout…whatever it is and watch how quickly you are consuming your gallon throughout the day.
Another way to get more fluid into your body is to take water enhancers. No, throughout the day you should not be only consuming water + something else, but you can use things such as 1st Phorm Greens/Reds, electrolyte supplements such as SKRATCH, LMNT or NUUN, 1st Phorm Micro-Factor Powder to help the monotony of drinking boring water.
Lastly, a simple way to make drinking more water easy is using a straw! It is far easier to drink more water through a straw than it is through a regular water bottle or cup. I recommend using these reusable straws which are my favorite the kids and I use! They also make gallon containers with straws like THIS ONE.
The more hydrated you are the more your body will get used to hydration and you won’t have to use the bathroom every 10 minutes.
